Clary Sage varies greatly in its fragrance depending on where it’s grown. There are some truly sweet varieties from Eastern Europe and from the USA. French grown Clary Sage tends to be a bit drier and can be almost abrasive at first; followed up by a rich, warm and hearty embrace. Generally, the fragrance profile of Clary Sage contains elements of fresh-damp and sweet earth, tobacco, warm musk with a dash of camphoraceous.

Clary Sage's main areas of production are in the South of France, Bulgaria, Crimea, England, Hungary and the USA. The essential oil is extracted from the steam distillation of fresh herbs in flowers which is usually from August through September.

Clary Sage essential oil is antibacterial, antifungal, anti-infectious, antispasmodic, astringent, mucostatic and carminative. Historically it has been used as a digestive stimulant, a nervous and cerebral restorative, an anti-depressive, a mild euphoric, a reproductive restorative, an agalactic, a venous and pelvic restorative, and a neuromuscular, uterine, intestinal and respiratory relaxant.

Because of its broad reaching impacts, Clary Sage is potent ally for supporting the mental and emotional bodies. It relaxes and at the same time revives the mind. Its euphoria producing effects can both ‘take you out of yourself’ whilst bringing you deeper and deeper into your own physical body.

Use Clary Sage oil with caution during pregnancy in general. It is not contraindicated but deserves awareness in regards to exposure due to uterine affinity.
