Juniperus communis - Bosnia

Juniper Berry oil has a strong, spicy camphoraceous aroma with sweet pine needle woody characteristics. The juniper tree, Juniperus communis, is an evergreen shrub that grows in many parts of the world, including North America, Europe, and Asia. It produces seed cones that are commonly known as juniper berries. Though the berries’ coloring varies, most are deep blue. This fresh essential oil originates from Bosnia and is steam distilled.

Production areas: Bosnia, Macedonia, Albania, Turkey, France, Italy, Hungary, England and Croatia.
Extraction: Juniper Berry essential oil is created from the steam distillation of the fresh, dried ripe berries. Some batches include leaves and stems.

In aromatherapy, Juniper Berry essential oil is used to treat genito-urinary problems, including: kidney congestion; urinary stones; urinary tract infection; cystitis; edema; prostate gland enlargement; amenorrhea; dysmenorrhea; difficult birth delivery; leucorrhea; genital warts; gonorrhea. Juniper may also prove of value in the treatment of: poor appetite; liver sluggishness; cirrhosis; pancreatic deficiency; diabetes; colitis; flatulence; colic; intestinal infections; hemorrhoids; varicose veins; obesity. It is considered a valuable purifier and antiseptic potentially useful in: purifying the blood encouraging the excretion of uric acid; detoxification of the tissues of those who habitually over-indulge in alcohol and rich foods; alleviating skin problems related in part to autotoxemia, such as colds, bronchitis, acne, eczema, dermatitis, skin ulcers and atonic wounds. Juniper is not only a blood purifier but a heart tonic and circulatory stimulant as well. This accounts in part for its value regarding: hemorrhoids; varicose veins; skin ulcers and atonic wounds; hair loss; coldness; weakness; chronic drowsiness; languor. Juniper’s support of blood circulation and tissue detoxification make it a useful adjunct in the treatment of: arteriosclerosis; arthritis; rheumatism; muscle stiffness; sciatica.

Regarding the psycho-spiritual plane, juniper oil is considered useful for relieving certain cases of: nervous tension and weakness; anxiety; depression; worry; confusion; restlessness; psychological stagnation; self-absorption; fear of failure; fear of facing death; weakness of will; preoccupation with the past; feelings of isolation and being misunderstood and unappreciated; feelings of guilt; feelings of worthlessness; aversion to social interaction with a desire to withdraw; lifting the spirits of those who take care of the ill or are otherwise feeling burdened by challenging situations; poor memory. Juniper may aid in: clearing negative energy; restoring objectivity; helping one to overcome the effects of emotional violence; reducing obsessions and addictions.

Juniper berry oil is contraindicated for internal use during pregnancy because of its uterine stimulant action; topical and environmental use is fine during that time, however. The oil is also strongly cautioned in chronic organic kidney disease (nephritis, nephrosis) as there is a possibility that its terpineol and terpinen-4-ol content, both of which are involved in its diuretic action, may irritate and overstimulate the kidneys (the research is still inconclusive). In functional urinary disorders, however, Juniper certainly poses no problems.
