Myristica fragrans - Sri Lanka

Our Nutmeg Oil from Sri Lanka is steam-distilled from the dried fruits of the Myristica fragrans tree. It is a competitor to the predominant Indonesian variety of nutmeg, with differing qualities. The oil’s aroma and flavor retain the distinctly terpenic and spicy characteristics expected of nutmeg, though the oil’s higher quality allows it to be used in all manner of different flavor and fragrance applications. While it can generally be used interchangeably with Indonesian material, Sri Lankan nutmeg oil has a more pronounced woody undertone, giving the oil a richer dry down. Spicy, warm, sensual and intoxicating, Monara’s Nutmeg reflects the country it originates from.

 

Nutmeg loves warm and humid regions. It is indigenous to the Moluccas (or Spice Islands) of the Indonesian Archipelago. The primary production areas are the Moluccas, Sumatra, Java, Sri Lanka, India, Grenada, Jamaica

Extraction: Steam distillation of the dried worm-eaten seeds (now devoid of protein, fat and carbohydrate) throughout most of the year1 kg oil yield from: 10-14 kg of the seeds (an excellent yield)

Nutmeg essential oil can exert the following actions: analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-diarrheal, anti-diabetic, antiemetic, anti-fungal, antioxidant, anti-parasitic, anti-rheumatic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, anti-thrombotic (reduces abnormal blood clotting), anti-ulcer, aphrodisiac, carminative, cardiac tonic, digestive stimulant, emmenagogue, hepato-protective (protects the liver), hypo-lipidemic (lowers blood fat levels), laxative, stimulant.

Both herbal medicine and aromatherapy attribute the following properties to Nutmeg: uplifting and energizing, invigorates and activates the mind, counteracts general debility, mental sluggishness, nervous fatigue, anxiety, and depression; treats headaches, poor vision, insomnia and proneness to fainting and it has been known to heighten dream activity. In this way Nutmeg essential oil makes a fitting remedy for pathological or chronic discouragement, apathy, sinking type depression, sluggish motivation, low self-esteem manifesting as insecurity and corrosive self-doubt, frozen or stuck in fearful states, apprehension, actual or perceived unhealthy vulnerability, mental and physical tiredness, and poor concentration and memory.

Nutmeg is a medium-strength remedy with some cumulative toxicity

Topical Safety Status: Non skin-irritant, non-sensitizing

Precautions: Nutmeg oil carries cumulative toxicity because of its myristicin content that can cause potential neurotoxicity. This implies avoiding continuous internal use, especially on its own. Clinically, Nutmeg should be used in a blend or formula with other oils rather than on its own. For the same reason, and because of an addition a uterine stimulant action, Nutmeg is also contraindicated during pregnancy, labor and postpartum; it should also be avoided in cancer conditions
