Our special reserve of dark Indonesian Patchouli oil is extracted by steam-distillation of young leaves that have first been steam-scalded, dried or lightly fermented to effect rupturing of the plant cell walls.
Patchouli oil is light yellow to dark brown or amber in color and moderately viscous, the only difference between light and dark patchouli oil is the container in which they are distilled. Dark patchouli oil is distilled in iron vats, which impart a dark hue to the oil. Light patchouli oil is distilled in stainless steel vats.
Our iron distilled extra dark variety of Patchouli oil has a woody, smoky, earthy aroma with a slightly spicy note. Like a fine wine, Patchouli is one of the few oils whose scent improves with age, losing some of its coarser notes and developing a sweet top note.
